Glossary
Absolute
Highly concentrated, highly aromatic extractions from plants. The process is usually solvent extraction which results in a concrete, then the concrete is extracted with ethanol. This extract is cooled, the solidified waxes are cold filtered and yields a liquid extract. When the ethanol evaporates an oil – the absolute – is left behind.
Accord
Like the notes in a music chord, the perfumer uses accords to create layered, complex yet harmonious blends usually created by scent family; amber, citrus, chypre, floral, forest, fougère, earthy, oriental, woody.
CO2 Select Extract
CO2 Select Extracts are extremely pure plant extracts produced from a relatively new and highly efficient extraction process. The CO2 extraction process, or supercritical extraction process, will in some cases.
Essential oil
A concentrated hydrophobic liquid containing volatile chemical compounds from plants. Used in perfumery, aromatherapy, and alternative medicine. The process to create an essential oil is generally extraction by distillation, often by using steam. Other processes include expression, solvent extraction, resign tapping, was embedding (usually florals), and cold pressing.
**(NOTE: improper use of essential oils may cause harm including allergic reactions and skin irritation. Children and pets may be particularly susceptible to the toxic effects of improper use.
Dry down
The period of time after the middle note dissipates revealing the base notes and the body of the perfume is called the dry down.
Natural Isolates
Naturally occurring chemicals (single chemicals) that have been “isolated” from their natural sources using the least invasive methods of extraction, usually fractional distillation. They have been extracted by purely physical means and have not undergone any chemical transformation.
